Recognising the disproportionate level of male responsibility for perpetuating violence against women and girls, the African Union and UN Women recently convened a Stakeholders Consultation at the Conference Hall of the Presidential Villa in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The stakeholders include a sampling of traditional rulers and religious Leaders from several African countries, along with functionaries of the African Union, the DRC Presidency, UNDP, UNFPA, AWLN and JPT. Dr. Haliru Yahaya, Emir of Shonga and Very Rev. Fr. George Ehuhansi were the Nigerian delegates at the event which aims at preparing an ‘AU Convention on the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls.’ The draft convention will be presented to the Assembly of African Heads of States and Governments for ratification at their 37th General Meeting which comes up in 2024.
