Nigeria’s contingent to
the 2019 World Wres-
tling Championships
in Nur-Sultan – the
capital city of Kazakh-
stan – has departed the country for
the championships which kicked off
yesterday.
The delegation, which is made up
of six athletes – all of whom won
gold at the recently concluded 12th
African Games in Morocco – and two
coaches, was led by president of the
Nigeria Wrestling Federation Hon.
Daniel Igali.
In the Women Wrestling style,
World no 3 Odunayo Adekuoroye
(57kg), winner of a silver medal in the
global showpiece in 2017, is joined by
African champions Blessing Onyebu-
chi (76kg) and Mercy Genesis (50kg)
as well as reigning Commonwealth
gold medallists Blessing Oborududu
(68kg) and Aminat Adeniyi (62kg),
while 3-time African champion
Emmanuel Ogbonna (74kg), the only
male athlete in the team, will be com-
peting in the Freestyle event.
In Kazakhstan, the athletes will be
under the watchful eyes of coaches;
Purity Akuh and Victor Kodei.
Medallists at the World Champion-
ships will automatically qualify for
the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo,
Japan.
