Trust is the backbone of healthy and happy relationships in all perspectives of life. Trust can be earned. It can be lost. And it can be regained. What builds trust in a person? How do you win the trust of others? BETTY AMUKPO takes on some children. Excerpts:
‘Stand up for what is right, irrespective of who is concerned’
Trust is a firm belief in what you have in someone. Proverbs 3:5-6 says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart…” Psalm 28:7 states, “The Lord protects and defends me, I trust in him.” I will win trust in people by being honest, honour my commitment, truthful to people, apologise for my mistakes, communicate effectively with people and care for them. Stand up for what is right, irrespective of who is concerned with good sense of judgement. Give justice without fear or favour (Jeremiah 17:7-8). Respect views of others and accept their meaningful contributions

‘Always tell the truth no matter what’
How to win the trust of others? Trust requires long-term thinking. It might seem convenient in the moment to blame someone else or to make decisions that benefit you in the short term. But before you act, think about how they may affect how others perceive you in the future. Also, developing a reputation as someone who is dishonest is one of the fastest ways to erode trust. Always tell the truth no matter what.

‘Being honest’
I win the trust of others:
1. By greeting them warmly with respect, as if I am greeting an old friend I haven’t seen in a while.
2. By talking slowly. Because being a fast talker has negative connotations.
3. By validating myself.
4. By listening intently.
5. Asking great questions.
6. By being honest.

‘Keeping away from gossip and slander’
We can win the trust of others by being trustworthy with the little things committed to us. Luke 16:10. Demonstrating trust in our words and keeping away from gossip and slander. Proverbs 25:9-10. In the heat of an argument, don’t betray confidences; rather be a trustworthy friend. Trustworthiness in our actions – Don’t lie. Don’t steal. Don’t cheat! Be a person of honesty and integrity by God’s grace, even when no one is watching. Bearing in mind that we are ambassadors of Christ, Proverbs12:22.

‘When people know that you are sincerely serving God’
To gain people’s trust you have to be honest. truthful and humble. No one will be successful in life without good relationship with others. To be in good relationship with people you must earn their trust. Proverbs 18:1 says, people who do not get along with others are interested only on themselves; making them to lose trust of others. You will also earn people’s trust when you are honest and accountable with whatever that is entrusted to you in humility, Proverbs 18:12 and when they know that you are sincerely serving God. Proverbs 18:10. You will also earn people’s Trust when you are Honest and accountable with whatever that is entrusted to you in humility

‘Admitting our mistakes, not blaming others’
Trust is like a paper, once it’s crumpled it can’t be perfect again. Trust is having confidence, faith or hope in someone or something. Trust is believing that things will be better in the future. We win the trust of others by being honest, be yourself in all circumstances, admitting our mistakes, not blaming others, open to all and not judgmental. It is said that we can never trust anyone completely but God, because He changeth not. In the Bible, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego completely put their trust in God not minding the outcome. Psalm 146:3 states, “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.” Psalm 18:14:” God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to Him for protection.” Thus, we can win other people’s trust by being honest, kind, truthful, transparent and above all live as God would live.
