Children are the most valuable assets of parents, yet most often, they do not seem to pay the desired attention to the needs of their children and wards due to challenges of their everyday lives. Parenting requires finding the balance between accomplishing economic stability for the family and childcare duties. Parenting also requires finding the balance between emotional bonding, loving the children, caring for them, impacting spiritual and moral values on them, disciplining them and providing their basic needs beyond shelter, feeding, education and lots more. All children have needs, which if given in the appropriate balance will help them develop into rounded individuals. What do kids actually need? BETTY AMUKPO speaks with some children. Read the excerpts.

‘Love, care and support’

What I really need from my parents are their love, care and support. I need my parents to train me in the right way so that I will not go astray, I need them to help me grow physically and emotionally as well as in my spirituality with God. I also need my parents to guide me to make right decisions and to make me a better person in the future and I pray that the Lord will help them to direct us well through Christ our lord Amen .

‘Their Presence

As a young child I need my parents’ love, care, support and their presence. I need them to teach me to do the right thing, to train me in the way that pleases God so that I will not be useless in future and I also need them to always guide and make the right decision for me. To be sincere, the presence of my parents mean a lot to me

‘My parents to be more united’

For my parents to be more united so that even with youth going astray, I would understand the values of spirituality and a good relationship with God. I also want my parents to be able to give me proper education.

‘Pay my fees; guide me in the way of God’

I really want my parents to pay my school fees so that I will be great in life, and I also want my parents to guide me in the way of God.

• Agbo Chisom

‘Listening ear’

Children need reassurance from their parents that they are safe and secured. When one parent is planning on leaving the home, encouraging words can help to smoothen children. it is important to be up front with children about the changes. Give us a listening ear.

‘Train me to be a Reverend Father and medical doctor’

I want my parents to train me to become a Reverend Father and also to become a medical doctor.

• Peter Victor Egbo

‘Understanding and sound education’

We children really need their unconditional love, understanding, and sound education from our parents. They should correct and also stand for us when we do wrong. They should observe what we do and praise us if we get it right. We need their encouragement to do better

‘Be my best friends; Be proud of me’

I want my parents to take good care of me and my siblings. I want my parents to be my best friends, people I can talk to when I’m feeling down. I want my parents to be proud of me and my siblings in the nearest future. My mummy always says if anyone must succeed in life he or she must have the fear of God in them and also seek the face of God , so I will want them to teach me how to seek God’s face

‘Utmost support in the right path’

As a blessed child to my parents all I want from them is their utmost support in the right path so I wouldn’t go astray because without their support I’m of no significance.
