Humility is often misunderstood as weakness, yet the Bible presents it as a profound strength, an essential virtue in the life of every believer. Far from self-deprecation, true humility is the recognition of our dependence on God and a willingness to serve others before ourselves. In Philippians 2:3, Paul exhorts, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves.” This call to selflessness echoes the very nature of Christ, who, though divine, chose the path of lowliness for the sake of humanity.
Jesus Himself set the ultimate example. In John 13:14–15, He says after washing the disciples’ feet, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” The King of kings stooped to serve, teaching that greatness in God’s kingdom is measured by our humility. The reward of humility is also underscored in James 4:10: “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” This assurance shows that God honours those who bow before Him, raising them in due time.
In a world that celebrates self-promotion, the humble person shines with quiet strength, anchored in God’s grace. Humility allows us to listen, learn, forgive, and lead with compassion. It draws us closer to God and makes room for His power to work through us. As Micah 6:8 reminds us, “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
