The Catholic Church has a new leader, Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, an American cardinal who was elected on May 8, 2025. As the 267th successor of St. Peter, Pope Leo XIV brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his new role.
Early life and formation
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV was raised in a devout Catholic family. His academic journey began at Villanova University, where he earned a degree in mathematics. He later joined the Augustinian Order and pursued theological studies at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

Pope Leo XIV’s priestly career spans over four decades, with significant experience in missionary work, particularly in Peru. He served as a prior general of the Augustinian Order and later as the apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo, Peru. In 2023, he was appointed as the prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, overseeing the nomination of bishops worldwide.
Key strengths and expectations Pope Leo XIV’s leadership style is characterised by:

• Academic rigour: With a doctorate in canon law, Pope Leo XIV brings a strong foundation in theology and church governance.
Challenges ahead
As Pope Leo XIV takes the helm, he faces several challenges, including:
• Reforming Church Structures: He will need to balance the implementation of synodality with the concerns of skeptics within the Church.
• Addressing clergy sexual abuse: The new pope must prioritise rooting out clergy sexual abuse and providing support to victims.
• Managing Financial Challenges: He will have to navigate the Church’s financial woes, including a looming pension deficit and budgetary shortfalls.
Pope Leo XIV’s message of hope
Despite these challenges, Pope Leo XIV’s message is one of hope and unity. In his first appearance, he called for peace and emphasised the importance of dialogue and building bridges. His commitment to being a pastor for all people, particularly those who suffer, is evident in his words and actions.
As the Catholic Church embarks on this new chapter, Pope Leo XIV’s leadership promises to bring a renewed focus on missionary work, synodality, and compassion. With prayer and support, we look forward to the journey ahead, trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the leadership of our new pope.
