Children from across the Archdiocese of Lagos excitedly shared their most memorable holiday moments, filled with fun, laughter, and spiritual growth. From thrilling visits to parks, summer camps, and grandparents’ homes to attending daily Mass and enjoying simple family bonding; their stories reflected joy, unity, and gratitude to God. BETTY AMUKPO presents their experiences of faith, love, and the beauty of togetherness.

‘One of my most memorable days was visit to Wonder/ Magic Land’

My holiday was a special period of rest and joy. My memorable experiences during this holiday were unlimited. One of the most memorable days was going to Wonder/ Magic Land with my family, which made it more special and interesting. We went in, had fun, took some exciting rides, and enjoyed ourselves. I felt so much love and unity, reminding me of John 2:1–2, when Jesus attended the wedding feast with His disciples, showing that celebrating together is good and holy. Another memorable day was playing and having fun right in the comfort of our home. This reminded me of Psalm 133:1, which shows that family bonding and having fun with siblings is truly good and pleasant. The holiday was very special because I spent time with my family. This taught me that unity and love in a family promote better relationships between members, and I hope to carry this forward by being bold to share it wherever I am and keeping it forever in my heart.

‘My memorable experience during the holiday was going to Mass daily’

Pilgrims of Hope seems to refer to a theme for the 2025 Jubilee Year in the Catholic Church, emphasising spiritual renewal, reconciliation and pilgrimage. My memorable experience during the holiday was going to mass daily and paying attention to the readings of each day, attending lector practice and MCA meetings. This spiritual exercise made me believe that we as sojourns can only ask God to fill us with joy and peace so we can abound in his hope and love. Not only was I active in Church, I was also active at home doing chores and assisting my mum in taking care of my baby sister. Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” The 2025 Jubilee Year, themed “Pilgrims of Hope,” invites Catholics worldwide to embark on spiritual journeys, seek forgiveness and renewal, and experience the joy of pilgrimage.

‘My memorable experiences include summer coaching lessons’

During the holiday, my memorable experiences included summer coaching lessons where I improved my studies and gained wisdom (Proverbs 4:7). I also interacted with new friends who supported and inspired me (Proverbs 17:17). Preparing to enter a new school, higher grade, and future college gave me hope, trusting God’s plan for my life (Jeremiah 29:11).

‘At my Church’s Summer Camp, I witnessed the profound impact of faith’

As an animator at my Church’s Summer Camp, I witnessed the profound impact of faith on young lives. Through teamwork, bonding, sacrifice, and service, we collectively unlocked potential, transformed hearts, and shaped futures. 2 Corinthians 9:24 reminded me to ‘run in such a way as to get the prize,’ and together, our team’s unity and dedication left a lasting legacy of love, purpose, and spiritual growth.

‘The Summer Camp experience in our Church was truly wonderful’

As pilgrims of hope, holidays bring us spiritual rejuvenation. Reflecting on Psalm 122:1 — “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord” — we rediscover the joy of communal worship and the richness of sacred traditions. The Summer Camp experience, held in our Church from August 4 to August 29, was truly wonderful. It was both educationally and spiritually fulfilling, nurturing us morally and deepening our faith. Friendships were formed, and bonds were strengthened, making the experience even more memorable. Holidays give us the chance to reconnect with loved ones (Psalm 133:1), reflect on our spiritual journeys (Luke 24:13– 35), and find solace in the Word of God (Psalm 119:105). These moments renew our faith and inspire us to continue walking in hope.

‘My visit and stay with my grandma rank above all’

During the just ended holiday, I had so many memorable moments and experiences. Of all the experiences, my visit and stay with my grandma rank above all. During my stay with my grandma, I was taught many lives memorable lessons, I got to know more about my lineage, I was treated and pampered like a baby, and I became more useful and helpful in doing house chores. Most importantly, the words of wisdom I got from my grandmother are what will remain with me forever (Proverbs 13:20). The holiday with my grandma was truly memorable for me and together with her, we attended morning Masses together (Proverbs 22:6), she took me to the market and bought a beautiful school bag for me. I am so pleased and happy that I spent time with my grandma during the holidays.

‘Taking time for prayer and reflection helps deepen faith and connection with God’

Being a pilgrim of hope is about journeying with faith and purpose, trusting in God’s plan. During holidays like Christmas, it’s a time to reflect on spiritual growth, kindness, and service to others. Experiences: Acts of kindness can brighten someone’s day, reflecting God’s love. Forgiveness is key to healing and unity, just like pilgrims sang Psalm 84 on their journey to Jerusalem. Trusting in God’s plan even in uncertainty, brings peace and hope. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Serving the poor, sick and marginalised is a way to show God’s love. Taking time for prayer and reflection helps deepen faith and connection with God. Pilgrims of Hope emphasise living out faith with hope and discipleship, inspired by biblical figures like Mary, Joseph, and the Shepherds who journeyed to Bethlehem.

‘My best holiday memory was visiting my grandparents’

My holiday was special because I learned to help my parents at home. I remembered “Honour your father and mother” (Ex. 20:12). Playing with friends reminded me that “A friend loves at all times” (Prov. 17:17). Each day I gave thanks, for “The Lord is good” (Ps 34:8). My best holiday memory was visiting my grandparents. I felt peace, recalling “Children are a heritage from the Lord” (Ps 127:3). Sharing meals brought joy, as “Give us this day our daily bread” (Mt 6:11). At bedtime, I trusted, “The Lord watches over you” (Ps 121:5).

‘I felt a profound sense of thankfulness and community’

During the holiday season, I felt a profound sense of thankfulness and community, similar to the message in Psalm 133:1, which emphasises the harmony among brothers. Enjoying meals and sharing stories with loved ones filled me with happiness, reminiscent of Acts 2:46-47, where the early Christians gathered to share food and fellowship. I also took time for reflection and service, motivated by Matthew 25:40, which reminds us that helping those in need is akin to serving Christ Himself. Altogether, these moments underscored the significance of love, compassion, and unity in our spiritual journey.
