Parents, teachers, Church and others who have responsibility to young people have been urged to realign themselves to moral values of honesty, selfless service, and working for the common good, and instill these in the young ones at the point of learning at their tender age. The charge was given by Most Rev. (Dr.) Alfred Adewale Martins, Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, during the unveiling of the new logo of St. Augustine College of Education (Project T.I.M.E.), Akoka, Lagos, held recently in the school premises. Archbishop Martins noted that even with the additions, in terms of facilities, courses and programmes, the institution has continued to maintain its core value, as well as objective and mission of moral education.
He however, regretted that in present time, the moral values that used to be held very strongly in society are not regarded in the same way. According to the Archbishop, the devaluation of moral values in schools is just a replication of what is happening in the larger society. He advocated that the schools where the children are formed, should be like a vanguard for moral education, adding that everybody within the institution must have and stand on the values of honesty, selfless service and work for the common good. Archbishop Martins asked parents to join hands with the schools to bring up the children in the right way, by supporting and enhancing the training they (children) get .
He commended Very Rev. Fr. Vincent Olofinkua, the Acting Provost, for accepting to work in the college, and the Governing Council which he said proved to be men and women who were truly committed to the transformation of the institution. Thanking all who have contributed positively to the college, he said 53 years after, the school has a brighter future, morally, and providing other opportunities that would add value to its life, in new courses and new ways of evolving students. Also speaking on the occasion, Fr. Olofinkua said still maintaining its initial aim of being an ecumenical project, the College has grown for over a period of 50 years to offer programmes such as Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) and B.Sc, B.Ed programmes in affiliation with the University of Ibadan.
He added that the College which has been repositioned to embrace technology and best global educational practices in both pedagogy and infrastructure, currently has a state of the art internet facility with an E-library, among other things that foster students’ talents and promote their holistic development. Fr. Olofinkua said the new developments in the College has necessitated a total rebranding that will not only reflect the core values, vision and mission of the College, but also project its current status. He disclosed that one of the steps towards achieving this goal is the redesigning of the College Logo to evolve with the new trend in the College, and accurately present it to the outside world. According to the priest, the new logo was designed by two students who came out tops in a competition to get the best style that suits the college’s current status.
