Emulate the example of famous people in the Holy book such as Jeremiah, John the Baptist, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego who spoke boldly against evil in their time at the expense of risking their lives. This was the submission of the Archbishop of Abuja Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama who gave the charge in a Homily he delivered recently at St. Charles Lwanga Parish, Apo, Abuja against the backdrop of what he described as the increasing cases of heinous crime of rape in the country. He urged the Faithful to speak out and condemn perpetrators of the dastardly act which he insists is repulsive and reprehensible as it is dehumanizing. Rape, according to the Prelate, inflicts life-long untold psychological trauma on the victims, noting that it is not only sinful but barbaric and criminal act.
He recalled the painful death of the University of Benin student, Miss Vera Omozuma who was raped and murdered in the church on May 27, 2020 as well as other cases involving young girls and minors. Archbishop Kaigama revealed that the Abuja Archdiocese has responded to the call for safeguarding of minors and vulnerable persons by setting up a committee in compliance with the objective of the Supreme Pontiff. He called for prayers for the victims and hoped those caught in the act would be made to face the full weight of the law.
