The SMMM Generalate Afaraukwu Umuahia, the SMMM Congregation distributed bags of rice, other condiments and food stuffs to the poor people from across some of the areas where the Mercy Brothers work within Umuahia diocese: Afara, Bende and Etitiulo. This was done through the help of a Cousin to the Superior General Very. Rev. Fr. Dr. George Okorie,SMMM, who donated the sum of 1Million Naira to the Congregation, for the care of the poor.

The said Cousin who pleaded anonymity, has been supporting the SMMM Congregation annually in the training of her Seminarians. We gathered that the donor made available the money for the procurement of the palliatives in thanksgiving and fulfilment of his promise to God, over the safe delivery of his wife in the US. According to Fr Kingsley Chukwunonso Ogbu, the Director of Communications for the SMMM Congregation, “The donor redeemed half of the money which was given to the Justice and Peace Initiative(JPI) of the Congregation, under the stewardship of Rev. Fr. Christian Ugwu,SMMM who coordinated the purchase and distribution of the food stuffs.”

We gathered that this is the first batch of the palliatives. The second batch will still be distributed soonest to some other areas of the SMMM Apostolate within Ecclesiastical Province. While speaking at the event, the Superior General, thanked God for the donor and invited the brothers and all others around to continue to pray for him who has made, in his words “ this great sacrifice for humanity”
