The recent furore generated by the
Supreme Court verdict on the
Imo State elections leaves much
to be desired. It shows clearly that our
judiciary needs urgent overhaul. It also
points to the fact INEC has not lived
up to expectation in terms of conduct
of elections. In the first instance, while
we await the technical report from the
judges on how they reached their ver-
dict, it is surprising that the same INEC
that suspended the results of over 388
polling units, could not come forward
to justify the reasons for their actions
at the court. What this means, invaria-
bly, is that they allowed the opposition
to capitalize on the legal loopholes that
were left hanging. Must the final out-
come of all elections be decided in the
courts? If that be the case, of what use
is INEC? Can they truly be trusted to
deliver on free and fair elections in this
country?
