NNL Chairman, George Aluo, has praised Nasarawa State for its commitment to football, saying it’s fast becoming a hub for the Nigeria National League (NNL). Aluo thanked the state governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, for his passion and support for sport. “Governor Sule has shown that he’s not just a supporter of football, but a pillar of sports in the state,” Aluo said, speaking after a successful opening of the 2025/2026 NNL season. “He understands that football is a pathway way to encourage and develop the youth, and we’re grateful for his efforts.”

Aluo referenced the governor’s recent national award from the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), saying he wasn’t surprised by the recognition. “Governor Sule’s dedication to sports development is evident, and we appreciate his commitment to Nigerian football.” He commended the state’s efforts in developing football, citing Nasarawa United’s progress and the success of the women’s team, Amazons, and FC Basira. “This wouldn’t have been possible without Governor Sule’s support. He understands that the youth need support to fight restiveness, and Nigeria needs to support its youth.”

Aluo also thanked the deputy governor, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, and all who attended the NNL season opener even as he urging the state government not to relent in paying special attention to sports and youth development. The NNL boss stressed that the league body would not mind returning to Lafia and Nasarawa State for the Super Four to conclude the season, citing the great beginning made possible by Governor Sule’s support. Aluo thanked everyone who supported the NNL, especially those who attended the opening match at the Lafia City Stadium where home side Basira secured a 3-1 victory over Mighty Jet on Saturday.
