Career development should ordinarily start at childhood; as children grow into adolescence their professional aspirations begin to take shape. Do you remember what career you dreamed of having when you were a kid? Very often the professions kids envision spurs them into action as they strive to realize their respective ambitions even though sometimes they switch to other careers due to changing industry trends and unexpected circumstances. Six wonderful kids and teenagers, in respective chats with BARBARA NEGBEJIE, talk about their dream professions
‘I want to be a Lawyer to protect the rights of the girl child’
“My dream profession is Law. I want to be a Lawyer so as to be able to protect the rights of the Girl child. The rights of the Girl child has been neglected and severely undermined in the society. I want to be the reason the rights of the Girl child is put back in the front burner, so the girl child can attain her God-given potentials. I will advocate the girl does not drop out of school and is not sexually violated.” • Anujulu Chidalu Joan, Jss 3, Spring College Ago, Okota, Lagos.
‘I will love to be an Artist; Artists have superior skills’
“There are many professions in the world but I will love to be an artist when I grow up. An artist is a person who draws and paints as a profession or hobby. There are so many aspects of arts but what I prefer most is the drawing and painting of images. I strongly believe that when I draw and paint it helps me read and understand the mood of things and people around me. Artists have a superior skill and activity in them. They are considered as intelligent and focused people. They also beautify our homes and environments. The use and combination of colour also makes artistic skills more interesting.”

‘I want to be a medical Doctor; it’s one of the best professions’
“The reason is that I like taking care of people around me especially babies. When people are unwell they need to see a Doctor in order to be properly treated to get well and I want to make sure that people get well fast because it makes me feel sad seeing sick people. I would like to treat them so that their pains can stop and they will be happy again to work and play. To be a Doctor is one of the best professions because it saves the lives of other professionals and make them able to do their jobs and make the society safe for everybody.”

‘I want to be an Agriculturist’
“I want to be an Agriculturist and commercial farmer in future. A farmer grows, produces, markets and distributes agricultural products both nationally and exports internationally. A commercial farmer uses vast land, and secondary tools such as tractors, harvesters, sprinklers, etc to plant and produce agricultural products, and rear animals such as cattle, poultry, pig, and aquatic animals, snails, etc in large quantity for consumption both locally and for exportation. I want to be a farmer because i want a surplus of food in the world, so nobody goes hungry, and while ensuring that, i also make money and become wealthy.”

‘I will remain focused on my dream of becoming a Doctor’ “All my life I have wanted to be a doctor. I would walk around my house with my plastic stethoscope and doctor’s bag ‘taking care ‘ of my family. I have just always been drawn to it. My decision to become a doctor was driven largely by values instilled in me by my faith and my family. The idea of being a part of a profession focused on helping others regardless of circumstance, focused on facilitating people living healthier and therefore, happier lives. I can’t imagine a more fulfilling job. Doctors as clinical scientists apply the principles and procedures of medicine to prevent, diagnose, care for and treat patients with illness, disease and injury and to maintain physical and mental health. In order to reach my dream of becoming a medical doctor, I must sit for required exams before I will be admitted in the School of Medicine. With my passion and determination, I must take these necessary steps and stay focused to achieve my dream profession of becoming a medical doctor.”

Nurses are the real heroes; I will like to be a professional Nurse
“I will like to be a professional Nurse in the future. Nurses are known for so many special qualities such as being kind to sick people, patient, loving and humble. Giving hope to the sick to live again. I would also love to study further in the nursing profession not to be a bed side Nurse only, but will be able to teach upcoming Nurses. I love to see smart nurses, dressed in their white uniforms. They are selfless and not selfish, because they don’t think of themselves first, but rather they think of saving lives. They face challenges of new diseases e.g COVID-19 that is deadly. For me, Nurses are the real heroes.
