Last Sunday, April 24 was Mother’s Day, it was also the feast day for Our Lady of Good Counsel. Mother’s Day is a special day reserved specifically for honouring mothers as well as motherhood, mothering figures and maternal bonds. Recently, all over the world people embraced the opportunity to once again show their mothers, stepmothers, foster mothers or guardians that they love and appreciate them. BETTY AMUKPO takes on some children on who their mothers are to them and how they celebrated them on Mother’s day. Excerpts:
‘After God, my mummy is my wheel to success’

She is my team. She is my management who always wants the best for me. She suffers herself for me to enjoy. She wakes up very early at 5a.m for me to be in school at 7a.m and she wakes up early for me to meet the Sunday morning mass. After God, my mummy is my wheel to success and will always be proud of her like the cloud beautifying the sky. If everyone denies me, my Mary will be there to support me and make me laugh. She is so special to me just as the sun is special to us.
‘My mother is my jewel’

My mother is my jewel. My mother is a woman I cherish so much. She is so lovely with a heart of gold, God fearing and trustworthy. My mother has a big heart, she can give out things to people in need, she has this strong believe that givers never lack. If I grow up, I will like to be like my mom. My jewel (Chima Uzoamaka) may God continue to bless, protect and keep you for me, my siblings and for the people you care for. As we celebrate Mother’s day this year, I celebrate you with lots of love. I love you mom and I will always love you, I will work hard and promise to build a house and buy you the latest jeep when I grow up because you merit it. I love you mom.

My mother is a great, lovely and amazing person, she is always there for us, very supportive and kind to all. On mother’s day, I wrote a poem for her and helped her to cook the delicious food she prepared for us on that day. My mother is my sweet heart, she is a great woman, a disciplinarian. She is a person who loves her children. She is loving and selfless; she goes out of her way to make sure we are well taken care of. I celebrated my mom by making her a card as a gift, praying for her and taking care of her.
