It is another Children’s Day. In less than five days children all over the world will experience this year’s edition. Besides the fact that the international event presents an annual opportunity to create awareness over issues affecting children and celebrate them as future of the society, Children’s Day in Nigeria is a day set aside to celebrate the Nigerian child. The day is usually marked with activities such as march past, dancing, singing competition, drama staged by children, as well as reading and essay writing competitions among others where children who emerge as winners are recognised and rewarded. It is a day children look forward to with so much expectation. What are these expectations? Some children share their thoughts with BETTY AMUKPO.
‘I expect a Children’s Day thatwill make all children aroundthe world feel special’
Children’s Day is a day set aside universally for children to have fun with family and friends. I expect a fun filled and fulfilling Children’s Day that will open the eyes of children to experience the love parents have for them. Also to remember the less privilege ones among us in order for us to have a fulfilled and better society. I expect a Children’s Day that will make all children around the world feel special, change the hearts of so many children to turn to God and draw closer to Him for Mark 10:14 says, “Let the little children come to me and do not stop them for the kingdom of God belongs to them”.

‘Celebrate this day with my friends in the school; my school plans to take us to N.T.A’
Children’s Day is a day set aside to celebrate and honour children all over the world. It is celebrated annually in Nigeria on the 27th day of May. It’s a day every child loves to celebrate. My expectation is to celebrate this day with my friends in the school. My school plans to take us to N.T.A. It is going to be fun as we have already started practicing dance and choreography which we are going to present. Other schools also will present different things. After the N.T.A visit, my family will also take my sibling and I to the cinema to watch movies like Enchants, Marcelino bread and wine. I will also attend the Children’s day celebrations in my Church. It is going to be fun with lots of dancing and singing and lots of food and drinks. I will also want to go for shopping to buy new things for myself. I cannot wait for the day to come. It will be enjoyment galore.

‘I expect people to celebrate children’
Children’s Day is a day set apart to celebrate children, which is on May 27. I expect people to celebrate children. I expect children to be happy and glad. Parents should also show love to their children (if possible prepare special foods for them). People should make children feel special.

‘All children in orphanages should be celebrated by our government’s
I expect parents to take all children to parks for picnic to have a fun filled day. Parents should throw a surprise party for their children. Parents should allow their children watch their favourite cartoons. Take children to waterfall, dance parties and leave gifts in their back packs. Children should be free on that day. All Children in orphanages should be celebrated by our government, I pray they remember them.

‘Since I am a child, I hope tobe celebrated on that day’
Children’s Day, like its name is a celebration for children and since I am a child, I hope to be celebrated on that day. I want my parents to wake me up with gifts, cook my favourite meal of fried rice and chicken and take me for shopping. It is sad that there are other children in the world who are not as privileged as I am, so I also want to spend the day putting smiles on the faces of the children. I can by going to any orphanage home around me.
