Early this week the social media was agog with the news that popular ‘big boy’ of Lagos Island Hushpuppi had been arrested by the American CIA for alleged involvement in a $100M scam. He was said to have been whisked away to U.S to face justice. While it may be too early to conclude on his innocence or otherwise, it is pertinent to note that our society helps to fuel crime. Even the media is guilty of this anomaly. We celebrate people who have made it to the top without knowing their sources of wealth. We relegate hard work to the background and celebrate instant wealth and affluence. Now, yahoo yahoo and ritual murder have become the norm. Many of our public office holders have turned our common wealth into their private use without accountability, while the masses wallow in abject poverty. Indeed, we need to change our value system. Materialism does not guarantee peace of mind and happiness. After all, we all came to this world with nothing.
