…Boosts wellness of 820 Lagosians
820 persons, including children, men and women have benefited from the 2024 free medical mission of the Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba (KSM) Nigeria, in Lagos. The annual charity event targeted at the less privileged in the society was hosted by the Lagos Metropolitan Council at Catholic Church of the Pentecost grounds in Ilasan, Jakande area of Lekki, Lagos, recently. The event kicked off with Holy Mass, concelebrated by Rev. Fr. Philip Sosu-Mobee, Chaplain, Lekki Sub council and Rev. Fr. Paul Bastos-Cardoso, Parish Priest, Catholic Church of the Pentecost. While delivering the homily, Fr. Bastos-Cardoso thanked KSM for their medical charity in Lagos, especially in his parish, acknowledging that the act aligned with Jesus Christ’s injunctions on the corporal works of mercy.

He added that only God would reward the good works of the Order. Leading KSM members on the medical mission was the Supreme Knight, Sir (Dr.) Charles Mbelede, the Supreme Physician Sir (Dr.) Frank Odafen and the Lagos Metropolitan Grand Knight, Sir Don Ezeh, supported by Lagos Metro officers. The medical team comprised 10 medical doctors of various specialisations, including pharmacists, optometrists, nurses in collaboration with the Family Health Initiative (FHI) NGO, ophthalmic nurses, as well as student nurses. Immediately after Mass, the medical outreach commenced with a health talk on water borne diseases and hygiene, jointly delivered by Lady (Dr.) Gertrude Bassey and Sir (Dr.) Frank Odafen to the large audience.

This was followed by medical screening and treatment which comprised; checking of vital signs of temperature and blood pressure; blood sugar tests, Hepatitis B and C, HIV and counselling; cervical cancer screening for women of 35 to 55 years; PSA tests for men in collaboration with John Thomas Foundation; Eye tests and giving out free reading glasses; free consultations and dispensing of medications, including deworming of children and adults. The beneficiaries went away with medicines and counselling, while some were referred to the St. Kizito Hospital, Jakande for further management. 100 free reading glasses were given out on the occasion.

To complement the medical issues addressed by the medical mission was the feeding of all 820 beneficiaries with various drinks and packs of rice and chicken, akara and bread, and biscuits for children and snacks, all through the day. At the end of the mission, KSM Nigeria felt satisfied to have executed a very successful medical mission in Lagos in a captive area of need. The KSM Supreme Physician said it all when he confirmed that the 2024 KSM Supreme medical mission in Lagos had exceeded expectations with the number of people attended to, especially with the novel idea of properly feeding the beneficiaries.
