As Nigeria’s landscape of faithbased service evolves, the Supreme Subordinate Commandery and Ladies’ Auxiliary, Nigeria, Knights of St. John International (KSJI) continues to stand out for its structured approach to charity, humanitarian service, and spiritual development. In an exclusive interview with The Catholic Herald, newly elected Supreme Subordinate President, Major General Joachim Chuks Amamgbo, and Supreme Subordinate Ladies Auxiliary President, Lady Nonye Okafor, opened up about the Order’s far-reaching contributions. “Our mandate is clear,” says Major General Amamgbo.
“We serve humanity, uphold Catholic values, and nurture the next generation.” From humanitarian and disaster relief, where KSJI recently donated 8 million to flood victims in 12 states, to prison ministry and healthcare outreach, the Order leaves no stone unturned. Members regularly visit prisons, provide healthcare support, and run health education programmes. Education is another priority. The Knights sponsor schools, cadet commanderies, and junior auxiliaries, mentoring youth in leadership and Catholic values. Church projects also benefit, with funding for priests’ training, Church construction, parish halls, and mass weddings. Civic responsibility is not overlooked— members actively advocate against societal ills, serving as a moral compass in communities.

“The Order has prioritised engaging and mentoring younger members, focusing on preparing them for future leadership through both spiritual discipline and vocational skills acquisition. “Support for the Church: The Order contributes to the spiritual and material growth of the Church by sponsoring the training of priests and religious and supporting faith formation (catechesis).” Community development is embedded in the Order’s DNA. Initiatives include, housing for retired priests and laity, as well as widow and orphan care, led predominantly by the Ladies’ Auxiliary. “We see ourselves as pillars of support,” says Lady Okafor. Additionally, KSJI ensures sick and death benefits for members and partners with HMOs to provide affordable healthcare coverage for the elderly.
The year 2026 marks a golden milestone—50 years of unwavering commitment to faith, service, and social development in Nigeria. “This anniversary is not just a celebration,” Major General Amamgbo emphasises, “it’s a rededication of our mission to uplift communities and strengthen the Church.” From disaster relief to youth mentorship, the Knights of St. John International remain a beacon of hope, service, and moral leadership in Nigeria—proving that faith, when matched with action, transforms lives.
