- Renew and rededicate yourselves to the service of God – Archbishop Martins
- Embody Christ’s Servant Leadership – Bishop Anagbe CMF
The Catholic Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Lagos, Most Rev. (Dr.) Alfred Adewale Martins has urged consecrated men and women to continue to dedicate their lives to following Christ more closely, and to remain faithful to their calling. He emphasised that true hope is not based on human circumstances, but on the promises of Christ, and that their witness is a powerful reminder of this truth. Archbishop Martins gave this charge at the opening Mass of Joint Conference of Major Superiors Male and Female Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2025 on Wednesday, in Lagos.
In his thought-provoking homily entitled, “Journeying in Hope: The Witness of Consecrated Life,” the Archbishop reminded them that true hope is not based on human circumstances, but on the promises of Christ, and that their witness is a powerful reminder of this truth. Archbishop Martins reflected on the Jewish Rite of the Presentation of our Lord Jesus in the temple, which is re-enacted on this feast day. He noted that this rite is a visible sign of one’s total self-giving and consecration to God, and emphasised the importance of obedience, poverty, and chastity in consecrated life.

In a special message to the Major Superiors and to the young and upcoming consecrated men and women, Archbishop Martins emphasised the importance of being a “bridge” between generations. He encouraged them to share life and experiences with one another and to create a space where brotherhood, acceptance, and love can flourish. Expressing his gratitude and joy for the gift of consecrated life in the Archdiocese, he acknowledged the tremendous work that consecrated men and women do in serving the Lord and His people, and lauded their witness to the Gospel values as a “glimmer of hope” in a world that often seems devoid of it.
The prelate also addressed the challenges that consecrated men and women often face, urging them not to become “hostages” to their own challenges. Instead, he encouraged them to go forth and proclaim the Good News, and to help others to resolve their problems. On a final note, he commended the consecrated men and women to the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and wished them a joyful celebration. As the Catholic Church celebrates the World Day of Consecrated Life, the Archbishop’s homily serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of hope and the vital role that consecrated men and women play in witnessing to the Gospel values.

In same vein, Most Rev. Chikpa Wilfred Anagbe CMF, Bishop Chairman for Consecrated Persons, Nigeria, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and Bishop of Makurdi, enjoined the Major Superiors to embody the qualities of Christ in their ministry. The Bishop in his keynote address at the opening ceremony of the AGM underscored the need for leaders to serve others rather than seeking power or prestige. He noted that Christ’s model of leadership is one of humility, compassion, and selflessness, and that these qualities are essential for effective ministry. Bishop Anagbe challenged the Major Superiors to examine their own leadership styles, asking whether they prioritise the needs of others or their own interests. He encouraged them to adopt a servant leadership approach, one that prioritises the well-being and growth of those under their care. The prelate also emphasised the importance of prayer and discernment in leadership.
He urged the Major Superiors to cultivate a deep sense of prayer, seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit in their decision-making. Furthermore, the Bishop highlighted the need for collaboration and cooperation among the Major Superiors. He encouraged them to work together, sharing their expertise and resources to advance the mission of the Church. Bishop Anagbe concluded his Keynote address by reminding the Major Superiors that their leadership is not about personal achievement or recognition, but rather about serving the Lord and His people. He urged them to remain faithful to their calling, embracing the challenges and opportunities of their ministry with courage and humility. As the AGM 2025 commences, the Bishop’s words serve as a timely reminder of the importance of servant leadership, prayer, and collaboration in the ministry of the Major Superiors.
