Interfaith relations in the Catholic Diocese of Oyo have taken a significant step forward, subsequent to a remarkable donation by Alhaji Barrister Ahmed Raji, a devout Muslim and Senior Advocate of Nigeria. On Sunday, November 17, he gifted a modern 400-seater assembly hall to the Diocese at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Isalu, Iseyin. This generous act replaces the former 80-year-old edifice that collapsed owing to old age.
The hall was named after Archbishop Gabriel ‘Leke Abegunrin, a notable figure in the Catholic Church. The Mass for the blessing and commissioning of the hall took place on November 17, 2024, with Most Rev. Gabriel ‘Leke Abegunrin, Archbishop of Ibadan Archdiocese and Metropolitan of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province as the chief celebrant. Most Rev. Emmanuel Badejo, Bishop of Oyo Diocese; Rev. Fr. Martin Badejo, and Rev. Fr. Anthony Fasola concelebrated the Mass. In his speech, Alhaji Barrister Ahmed Raji highlighted the Catholic Church’s long-standing tradition of humble service, remarkable strides in societal development, and unparalleled foresight in serving humanity.
He emphasised the importance of interfaith relations and encouraged Catholics, especially the youths, to appreciate their faith and contribute to societal progress. This heartwarming gesture by Alhaji Raji has strengthened interfaith relations in the region, and serves as a shining example of collaboration and mutual respect between people of different faiths as well as appreciation of each other’s values and beliefs.
