The Archdiocese of Lagos, in collaboration with the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, has announced the 2025 edition of the Immaculate Conception Novena, slated for November 29 to December 8 at the Archdiocesan Marian Shrine, Maryland. This year’s observance is anchored on the theme “The Magnificat: The Canticle of Hope for the Poor,” drawn from Luke 1:46–55. The Novena invites Catholics and all people of goodwill to embark on a nine-day spiritual journey centred on God’s mercy, love, and preferential option for the poor—values deeply embedded in Mary’s Magnificat and essential to the Church’s mission in Nigeria today.
Daily activities will begin with the Sacrament of Confession at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Holy Rosary at 5:00 p.m., and Holy Mass at 6:00 p.m. Each day will focus on a unique theme inspired by Mary’s hymn of praise, reflecting on God’s greatness, His tender regard for the humble, and His promise to fill the hungry with good things. Planned reflections include, “The Soul That Proclaims God’s Greatness,” “God Looks Upon Our Poverty,” “The Mighty One Does Great Things,” and “Lifting the Lowly.” The Novena will conclude on December 8 with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, themed “Mary’s Hope Fulfilled, Our Mission Renewed.”
A series of special events will also accompany the spiritual exercises. On December 3, participants will observe the Stations of the Cross, along with a special blessing for expectant mothers and religious articles. December 4 will feature Eucharistic Adoration with exposition, procession, and silent meditation, while December 7 has been dedicated to the Anointing of the Sick during Mass. The final day will be marked by a candlelight procession leading into the solemn Holy Mass in honour of the Immaculate Conception.
According to the organisers, the Novena serves as a moment of spiritual renewal and communal solidarity, inviting the faithful to seek the intercession of Our Lady, Queen of Nigeria, especially in these challenging times for the nation. The Archdiocese encourages all Catholics and friends of the Marian devotion to join this annual expression of faith, hope, and shared prayer.
