- Urges Christians to reflect, participate in Holy Week
As Nigerians navigate the complexities of their prevailing circumstances, Most Rev. (Dr.) Alfred Adewale Martins, Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Lagos has enjoined the citizenry to deepen their faith and reflect on the significance of the Holy Week. The Holy Week, which begins on Palm Sunday and culminates on Easter Sunday, is a significant period in the Christian calendar, commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Archbishop Martins charged Christians to use the period to deepen their faith, reflect on their relationship with God, and renew their commitment to living a life of love, service, and compassion. In his exclusive chat with The Catholic Herald, the Archbishop acknowledged the challenges facing the nation, including economic hardship, insecurity, and social unrest. However, he emphasised the importance of holding onto hope and faith during these difficult times. He charged the faithful to participate fully in the liturgical celebrations, including the Palm Sunday procession, the Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the Good Friday Service during which there is veneration of the Cross, the Easter Vigil and the Easter celebrations.
He emphasised the tradition of the Holy Week with its prime actions of Fasting, Prayer and Almsgiving. The Archbishop also reminded the faithful that these practices are essential for spiritual growth and development. He said, “Participate fully in the liturgical celebrations of the Holy Week, which are a powerful way to experience the love and mercy of God. Attend Mass, receive the sacraments, and engage in acts of charity and service to others.”
Finally, he urged Nigerians to work towards building a more just and equitable society, emphasising the need for individuals to take responsibility for their actions and to strive for the common good. Archbishop Martins offered words of hope and encouragement to Nigerians as he assured that even in the midst of challenges, God is always present and active.
