Without vaccines, we are at risk of serious illness and disability from diseases like measles, meningitis, tetanus and polio. Many of these diseases are life-threatening. Lately, the world has been in the midst of a COVID-19 pandemic and all have been charged to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. While some have been vaccinated, several have been hesitant to get the COVID-19 vaccination because they are worried about the possibility of any serious, long-term health issues that may be caused by the vaccine. Have you taken the COVID-19 vaccine? BARBARA NEGBEJIE enquires.

‘I am afraid of what the outcomes will be’

No, I am afraid of what the outcomes will be. A lot of positive and negative information have been circulating. So, just want to be absolutely sure the vaccine is safe before I take it.

• Lady Meg Edet, Lagos based Business woman

I do not intend to take it for many reasons’

I have not taken the COVID-19 vaccine and I do not intend to take it for many reasons. Firstly, I believe that as a pandemic COVID-19 will gradually fade as it is already. Secondly, I do my best to take the preventive measures and live healthy. I also hear in the news that the vaccine has side effects and are usually necessary for those with frail health and so on. So, I believe that I will be safe with taking the preventive measures as I continue to pray to God for good health.

• Mrs. Okwuchi Egboh, CCRN Coordinator, St. Cyril Catholic Church, Okota, Lagos.

‘I am not interested in taking the vaccines; I don’t believe in the protocol’

I am not interested in taking the vaccines because I don’t believe in the protocols as regards the local hospital, they are concentrating on the family members and you waste the whole day not getting to your turn.

• Lady Chinyere Nnedu, Lagos based Business woman

‘I have not really taken my jab because of unavailability of the vaccine’

COVID-19 vaccine; with so many writings on the pros and cons, conspicuous theorist, rare annihilation and other phobic associated with the vaccines yet the advent and administration of the vaccine have shown considerable decline on the infection rate and have helped some economies to open up for business. Humbly, many were afraid having heard so many frightful things, but by the reality of the day many are looking for it. I have not really taken my jab because of unavailability of the vaccine, I will however take the vaccine if readily available here in Nigeria. By and large I am in support of it and I will take it.

• Sir Iyke Udeozor (KSJI)

‘I received the vaccine against COVID-19; about a week later I had what seemed like a suppressed cold’

I received the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19. I had no immediate discernible pain, stiffness or other side effects. About a week later, I had what seemed like a suppressed cold which never fully developed but lasted a little over a week. Of course, I have no clue whether the cold was an opportunistic infection or if it was in any way linked to the vaccine. That was my experience.
