• To establish a strong link between Catholic Universities in France with Augustine University

By Neta Nwosu

The Ambassador of France to Nigeria, His Excellency, Mr. Jerome Pasquier last week, paid a courtesy visit, to Augustine University, Ilara-Epe (AUI). The visit was part of his tour of important locations within Epe town in Lagos State, especially the Sungbo Eredo embarkment which is a historical site that runs from Ijebu Ode through to Ife. Prof. Christopher Odetunde, the Vice-Chancellor, in the company of other management staff of the University received the Ambassador who was accompanied by the Alara of Ilara, His Royal Majesty, Oba Olukayode Olufolarin Ogunsanwo. The Vice-Chancellor of Augustine University, in his welcome address, thanked the Ambassador for finding the institution worthy of such visit, while stating the many opportunities inherent in establishing a lasting relationship, and collaboration with the University; especially in the area of research and culture as well as exchanges.

“Being a Catholic University in Nigeria, and with the millions of Catholic faithful in France, as well as well-established Catholic universities there, this is a great opportunity for the Embassy to serve as a point of linkage between AUI and these universities, through exchange programmes in the areas of research and culture for both staff and students.” Professor Odetunde said. The Vice Chancellor stated further that “the Sungbo-Eredo is a living example of such collaboration. These programmes will go a long way in enhancing the learning curve for staff and students from both countries; the synergy will also position AUI as a research hub”. In his response, the French Ambassador, His Excellency, Mr. Jerome Pasquier appreciated the warm reception.

While congratulating the Vice Chancellor on his appointment, he stated his plans to establish a strong link and cooperation between Catholic universities in France with Augustine University. He equally expressed optimism of establishing trade relations with Augustine University, Ilara town and France when the Covid pandemic is over. He thanked the University management for the support towards the Sungbo Eredo project aimed at preserving a cultural heritage. The Alara of Ilara, Oba Olukayode Ogunsanwo assured the French Ambassador of smooth trade relations, educational collaboration, agro business as well as agro allied research between Augustine University and France especially as the University seem to be making giant strides in Internally Generated Revenue initiatives through agriculture with the famous AUI Garri, AUI Fish, as well as AUI Water.
