Former Edo Deputy Gov, Shaibu is new DG National Institute of Sports (NIS)

President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has appointed the former Deputy Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu is the new Director General of the country’s foremost Institute of Sports, the National Institute of Sports. Philip Shaibu who takes over with immediate effect from Prof. Olawale Moronkola, is expected to initiate reforms in the Institute to reposition it to live up to its expectation of raising sound coaches in all sports in the country.

Philip Shaibu, a known figure in the country’s sports industry and beyond is expected to bring his expertise to the fore in his new role in alignment with the Renewed Hope agenda of His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Philip Shaibu demonstrated his love for the sector, his understanding and his progressive mindset in changing the narratives in the sporting industry when he served as the Deputy Governor of Edo state. His management of the sports sector in the state led to recording many international recognitions and successes. His reviving skills will once again be felt by the country in the sports education of the country.

The National Institute for Sports (NIS) was established in 1974 by the Administration of then Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces of Nigeria, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, based on the need by the government to improve Nigeria’s performance in international sporting competitions. The Law granting its autonomy, Decree 31 was promulgated on the 8th of July 1992. The National Institute for Sports is a research and training Institute. It is a Parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports. Inter alia, the Institute is saddled with the responsibilities of producing top-rated coaches, sports managers, and sports scientists and conducting sports research.
