Just like their soldiers in the frontline at the war at home against Russia, Ukraine’s national soccer team fought like wounded lions in Cardiff against Wales but failed to land in Qatar for the FIFA World Cup. A 34th minute own goal courtesy of a Gareth Bale’s free kick was all Wales needed to stop Ukraine.
For Wales, it was also a massive celebration as they qualified for the mundial for the first time in 64 years. Wales made their last World Cup appearance way back in 1958. Ukraine had before yesterday’s defeat beaten Scotland by 3-1 five days ago to reach the very last stage of the Russia 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Their games were delayed because of Russia’s invasion of the country.
