Christians, Catholics in particular have been urged to leave their old harmful and sinful ways, so that their fasting will be meaningful, as they are called to be generous to people who are in need. The charge was given by Most Rev. Gabriel ‘Leke Abegunrin, Archbishop of Ibadan in his 2023 Lenten Message delivered on Ash Wednesday in Ibadan, Oyo State. Welcoming the people to the Lenten season, which he said is another liturgical season of the Church, Archbishop Abegunrin pointed out that it is also election period in the country, as he urged Nigerians to anchor their voting and electoral processes on prayer, fasting and almsgiving. According to the Prelate, “Fasting in the Catholic Church, especially during lent has its own directives. Those between 16 and 60 years of age can fast. Those above 60 years, may or may not fast. In addition, those who are sick and have to use medication may not fast, so as to avoid injuring themselves. Again, those who are nursing babies have to eat, for the babies to have milk, so they may not fast. “Furthermore, those who are pregnant, may not fast, because of their condition. Also, those who are doing difficult works; like driving, working in factories, who actually need their energy, may also suspend fasting, and do some other sacrifices to make up for their fast. Such people then may have to be more generous to people and pray a lot. “It is important to know that this season is a very important one, therefore, we must be calm and calculated.
If we cannot leave our old harmful and sinful ways, then our fasting means nothing. And while we fast, don’t let us be stingy. Don’t cut down the meal of your children at home because you want them to fast. Don’t punish them, for fasting should be voluntary. At best, parents should take time to explain what fasting means to their children and allow them to decide whether to fast or not. “It is important to know that this is a special season for renewal. To renew ourselves therefore, we must go closer to God and to one another. Our unity should be strengthened, our love should be strengthened, and our willingness to do our work thoroughly should also be strengthened. The idea of not working and collecting money is sinful, let us do away with it. During this time, let us put aside all such acts and also ask God to assist us in leaving those things behind so that we can celebrate Easter with holiness of life. We know that a lot of things have happened this period, especially during these few days leading to the election. Despite all these, we should know that prayer can assist us, fasting and almsgiving as well can assist us. Above all, having good hearts can assist us”, he emphasised.
