As the month of May unfolds, the Catholic Church invites us to embark on a special journey of devotion and reflection. This month, traditionally dedicated to honouring the Blessed Virgin Mary, offers a unique opportunity for Catholics to deepen their faith, foster a sense of community, and seek the intercession of the Mother of God. The May Devotion is a time-honoured tradition that allows us to express our love and reverence for Mary through prayer, reflection, and communal worship. By participating in the rosary, attending Holy Mass, and engaging in other devotional practices, we can draw closer to Christ and seek the guidance and protection of His Mother.

Why every Catholic should embrace May Devotion

Deepening faith: The May Devotion provides a chance to reflect on the core teachings of the Catholic faith and to renew our commitment to following Christ.

Mary’s intercession: Seeking the intercession of the Blessed Mother can bring comfort, guidance, and strength to our spiritual journeys.

Community building: Participating in May Devotion can foster a sense of community and unity among Catholics, reminding us that we are part of a larger family of faith.

Spiritual growth: The devotional practices associated with May Devotion, such as praying the rosary, can help us cultivate a deeper prayer life and a greater sense of spiritual discipline.

Ways to observe May Devotion

As Catholics, we are invited to embrace the May Devotion with open hearts and minds. Here are a few ways to make the most of this special time:

Pray the Rosary

Gather with family and friends to pray the rosary, reflecting on the mysteries of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.

Attend Holy Mass

Participate fully in the liturgy, seeking to deepen your understanding of the Eucharist and your relationship with Christ. And participate in the Parish May Devotion programmes as well as observe same with your family.

Seek Mary’s intercession

Ask the Blessed Mother to guide and protect you, and to bring you closer to her Son.

Final notes

The May Devotion is a beautiful opportunity for Catholics to deepen their faith, build community, and seek the intercession of the Blessed Mother. By embracing this devotion, we can cultivate a greater sense of reverence, compassion, and love for Christ and His Church. Let us seize this opportunity to grow in faith and to draw closer to the Heart of Mary, and through her, to the Heart of Christ.

… Reverence in worship: Put away your phones

As we gather for Holy Mass and other spiritual programmes, we are invited to participate fully in the liturgy and to encounter the living God. However, a common distraction has become increasingly prevalent in our places of worship: The use of phones during Mass and other sacred celebrations. The Church is a sacred space where we come to worship, pray, and encounter God. Our behaviour during Mass and other spiritual programmes should reflect the reverence and respect due to the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Using phones during these moments can detract from the solemnity of the celebration and disrupt the prayerful atmosphere.

When we use our phones during Mass, we not only distract ourselves from the sacred liturgy, but also potentially disturb those around us. Our attention should be focused on the celebration, the readings, the homily, and the Eucharistic Prayer. By putting away our phones, we can more fully participate in the Mass and deepen our relationship with God.

We urge all Catholics to refrain from using their phones during Mass and other spiritual programmes. Rather, let us:

 – Participate fully in the liturgy: Engage in the prayers, readings, and hymns, and take part in the Eucharistic celebration.

– Maintain a reverent attitude: Show respect for the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and for the community gathered in worship.
