As Muslims across Nigeria marked the holy festival of Eid el-Kabir, the Catholic Diocese of Oyo has enjoined his Muslim counterparts to promote peace, unity, and interfaith cooperation. In a joint statement signed by the Bishop of Oyo Diocese, Most Rev. Emmanuel Badejo, and the Director of the Diocese’s Interreligious Dialogue Committee, Rev. Fr. Joseph Ogundipe, the Catholic leaders expressed gratitude for the gift of life and the privilege of witnessing another Eid celebration. “All glory to God for another celebration of this great feast of sacrifice, Eid el-Kabir. Eid Mubarak Kulukum!” the message read. “We believe that God gave humanity religion to promote peace and harmony, and to lead us back to our Creator. We affirm that this is equally true for Islam.”
The Diocese described Eid el-Kabir as a celebration deeply rooted in faith, obedience, and sacrifice—values that should inspire all believers to speak out against social ills that threaten national peace and development. “Though we may come from different backgrounds, we are all believers in the one true God,” the statement noted. “Our religions must challenge negative mindsets and foster mutual respect. While religion often intersects with politics, faith should guide values—not stoke division.” The Catholic leaders emphasised the vital role of interfaith collaboration, calling it a moral responsibility in Nigeria’s quest for justice, stability, and progress.
“Our collective effort toward building a more just and peaceful society is not a choice—it is a duty in service to humanity,” they stated. The message concluded with a warm salutation to the Muslim faithful: “Let us make our two beautiful religions a source of harmonious coexistence, joy, and peace. Once again, we wish you a blessed and fulfilling Eid el-Kabir celebration. Barka de Sallah!”
