Africa’s leading industrialist, Aliko Dangote, has extended heartfelt condolences to the Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, and the entire Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, following the death of Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio) at the age of 88.
In a condolence message signed by Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, the business magnate described the late Pontiff as “one of the most transformative Popes of the modern era,” whose life and papacy were marked by humility, simplicity, and deep concern for humanity.

“Before his passing on April 21, which incidentally coincided with Easter Monday, the Pontiff was a beacon of faith, love, and hope,” Dangote wrote. “For 12 years, he led by example, bridging the gap between the time-tested traditions of the Church and the challenges of the present.”
Dangote praised Pope Francis for choosing the name of St. Francis of Assisi, symbolizing his dedication to the poor and his preference for simplicity. He also hailed the Holy Father’s historic interfaith efforts, particularly the signing of the 2019 Document of Human Fraternity with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, which promoted peace between Christians and Muslims globally.
Highlighting the Pope’s unique legacy as the first Pontiff from Latin America in over 1,300 years, Dangote said he was “a global citizen who espoused divine virtues and preached unconditional love and mutual respect among Catholics and adherents of other beliefs.”
The industrialist assured Archbishop Martins of his prayers and solidarity during this period of mourning, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all those who ever knew and admired him. May the Almighty God grant you, the Lagos Archdiocese, and the Catholic Church in Nigeria the fortitude to bear this huge loss.”
Pope Francis, the 266th Roman Pontiff, died peacefully on Easter Monday after a 12-year papacy marked by reform, compassion, and global outreach. His death has prompted tributes from across the world, with leaders, clergy, and lay faithful reflecting on his impactful service to humanity.
