Following the outcome of the 2023 presidential elections, dreams, hopes and expectations have heightened. And the question, “what next?” is ringing through the minds of Nigerians. BETTY AMUKPO speaks with some children on their expectations from the president-elect. They respond thus:
‘Provide well trained, well equipped security personnel for the country’
1. Security: I want our new administration, especially the president to provide well trained security personnel for the country to be well protected from all forms of terrorist attacks and killing of our people. Our security forces should be well equipped with modern equipment.
2. Social amenities: Provide us with good health care centres, hospitals, good roads, pipe borne water, markets and provide education for all school age people in the country.
3. Good education: The president should be able to build government schools to enable children to go to school to prevent them from being illiterate children.
4. Infrastructural development: Our president should build factories, industries, refineries, companies, as these will make things easy and provide job opportunities for our graduates and all job seekers. This will in turn boost our economy.

‘He should be committed to justice and aid the needy and oppressed’
My expectations from the president-elect are:
1. He should have reverence for God (Matt. 22:37).
2. He should be committed to justice and aid the needy and oppressed (Proverbs 31:9).
3. He should be an obedient, honest and humble person (Phil.2:8).
4. He should love children and the youths like Jesus (Luke 18:26).
5. He should see himself as a servant-leader; that he is there to serve and not be served (Mark 10:41).
6. He should allow love and compassion for the people to motivate his actions and policies (Matt. 9:36).
These are my expectations, and may God grant them through Christ our Lord.

‘Make good decisions regarding the welfare of his people’
As a child, I expect the president-elect to make good decisions regarding the welfare of his people and be a servant leader. In Mathew 20: 26-28, Christ said, “If anyone wants to be great, he must be a servant” So, the president is expected to follow Christ’s footsteps.

‘Fear God because he will give account to God for all he does’
2 Timothy 2:15 NIV states, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth”. I expect the president-elect to fear God because he will give account to God for all he does. He should be good and take care of the citizens because they will speak good about him and the Angel of God will record it.

‘Provide basic amenities’
As a Nigerian, I expect that the president-elect should consider the people’s interest not the interest of his pocket. Infrastructural development: Providing basic amenities like building schools, providing constant power supply etc. Providing proper security: He should have character and integrity. He should be a man of the people. Psalm78:72

‘Reduce the level of looting of our commonwealth; see more young people serve in government’
My expectation from the president-elect is to make sure government officials both at the Local Government, State and National levels reduce the level of looting of our commonwealth. I would like to see more young people being given the chance to serve in government. They should also create more jobs by utilising the human and natural resources that we have.
