The Catholic Bishops Confer-
ence of Ibadan Ecclesiastical
province has kicked against the
proposed annual licensing of churches
by the Federal government.
The Federal Government had recent-
ly proposed the registration of church-
es for an annual fee for every marriage
celebration and issuance of marriage
certificate.
Addressing a news conference in Ado
Ekiti after a meeting of the Bishops,
president Catholic Bishops Conference
of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province Most
Reverend Gabriel Leke Abegunrin
urged the Federal government to have
a second look at such decision.
According to him, contemporary
circumstances in Nigeria demand that
government approach religious mat-
ters with utmost caution so as not to
be considered partisan and partial on
national issues.
Speaking on security, The most rever-
end Abegunrin expressed displeasure
over the increasing rate of kidnapping,
killings and robbery without any pos-
sible solution in sight to end the das-
tardly acts.
“The lack of a clear pattern of pun-
ishing crimes and commitment to the
protection of life and property on the
part of Federal Government and secu-
rity agencies have left many Nigerians
living in fear from day to day he said”.
The Bishops however stressed the
need for government to promote the
traditional human family as a means of
reforming the society.
