Olusegun Anjorin, Founder of Ellen Adeyinka Anjorin Cancer Foundation, EAACF, has announced plans to create awareness on cancer, educate the general public on the need for prevention of cancer, through the Ellen Adeyinka Anjorin Cancer Foundation annual memorial lecture, holding July 7, 2019, with the theme, “Cancer treatment with special reference to chemotherapy-pro and cons.” According to Anjorin, the foundation is named after his wife, Ellen Anjorin, who died from cancer of the colon, a year ago, precisely, July 7, 2019, while undergoing Chemotherapy. “This foundation was formed in her honour to serve as a living memorial”, he said. He disclosed that various experiences during the course of her (Ellen) sickness and treatment prompted the establishment of this foundation. “We discovered that financial implications, treatment pattern and education are paramount issues of concern in cancer management”, he said. He further disclosed that the principal aim of the EAACF is to create awareness on cancer, educate the general public on the need for prevention of cancer, and ultimately put in place a world class centre that is accessible and affordable to all.

He said: “The objectives include; to create awareness through an Annual Memorial Lecture, as we are doing today, to organise screening and testing of members of the public, especially the indigents at the grassroots for early detection of cancer (as we are also doing today), to erect an affordable and accessible world class cancer centre, to domicile within the proposed centre would be a resource domain for experts in the field to exchange ideas yearly, and also provide a rehabilitation corridor. “Via its objectives, EAACF is part of the on-going national efforts to reduce the incidence of cancers in Nigeria. Under this umbrella, the foundation has focused on creating awareness for the public as to the general causes and ways of preventing cancers, and by extension managing cancer. “In this connection, the inaugural lecture to enlighten the public was held on the 7th day of July 2020, as a virtual event because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The lecture titled “Cancer Prevention and Survival”, delivered by Prof. Oyeronke A. Odunola was well attended by multitude of participants across the globe.

Details of the lecture are available on our website -eaanjorincancerfoundation.org.ng. To further assist in curbing the increased rate in cancer cases in Nigeria, Anjorin enjoined the government to look into industrial waste management, especially in major cities of Nigeria due to increased rate of industrialization. According to Anjorin, the theme of the lecture this year, “Cancer treatment with special reference to chemotherapy-pro and cons” will be delivered by the Keynote Speaker, Dr. Omolola Salako, while the Guest Speaker, Dr. Ismail Zubair will speak on the topic “Coping with the side effects of chemotherapy and outlook. “Cancer concerns all, and ‘Chemo’ is a dreaded word in cancer treatment, and that is why this lecture is a must for all to attend”, he said. He encouraged cancer patients, cancer survivors, care givers and relations of those receiving treatment to attend, as they will benefit greatly. He said: “We are happy to include screening to our programme this year. “The mission and vision statements of the foundation are available on our website.

” According to Anjorin, EAACF is made up of sympathetic and genuinely concerned individuals and corporate entities across the nations of the world, who are dedicated to joining others in combating cancers. “Thus, our door is open to those who share our dreams, and are sincerely willing to work with us in realising our objectives”, he said. Ellen Adeyinka Anjorin Cancer Foundation is a registered non-governmental organisation formed over twelve months ago and based here in Nigeria.
