The Director of Social Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Godonu has called on Christians to embody the values of charity, generosity, and community prayer. Fr. Godonu stressed that these values are essential to their faith and are particularly emphasised during the Advent season. The Social Communications expert made this assertion in an exclusive interview with The Catholic Herald weekly newspaper on Monday.
He said, “Charity and Generosity are foremost in the Christian religion. Hence, every Catholic is expected to share available resources with brothers and sisters in need. This could be in cash or kind. Apart from this, we are called to community prayer through participation in the Eucharistic worship, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Individual and family prayers are also highly encouraged.” Fr. Godonu described the Advent season as a critical period in the liturgical year that specifically serves as a preparation for the coming of Christ.
“It is a time for reflection, prayer, and renewal, setting the tone for a fruitful liturgical year. By embracing the values of charity, generosity, and community prayer during Advent, we lay the foundation for a meaningful and spirit-filled year.” He added, “The Church’s emphasis on Advent is reflected through the call to repentance, and invitation to virtuous life in preparation for twofold of Christ’s coming. Hence, the Sacrament of Reconciliation takes centre stage for the first three weeks, just like the way it is during the season of Lent.”
