Young minds from across the Archdiocese have shared their reflections in essays entitled “Advent: The Wreath, the Candles. How Would You Celebrate Christmas?” The children explored the meaning of Advent, the symbolism of the wreath and candles, and their own joyful ways of preparing for Christmas. BETTY AMUKPO puts forward their writings that revealed creativity, faith, and excitement for the season.

The Advent wreath is a circle of evergreen leaves representing eternal life. The circular shape of the wreath indicates no beginning or end which symbolises God’s endless love and eternity. The Candles symbolise Christ as the light of the world coming to drive away darkness. Each week of Advent emphasises themes such as Hope, Peace, Joy and Love helping us to prepare our hearts and minds for the celebration of Christmas. Christmas is also the time we share things like food items, clothes to the needy, prisoners and sick. Isaiah 9:6 speaks of the child born with divine titles like (Mighty God and Prince of Peace).

‘Each candle symbolises different aspects of Advent’
Preparation and anticipation for the birth of Jesus Christ. Advent wreath represents God’s eternal love and the crown of thorns Jesus wore. Each candle symbolises different aspects of Advent. The purple 1, 2 and 4th Sunday represent royalty and repentance. Pink 3rd Sunday represents joy and celebration. White on Christmas eve/day represents Jesus the light of the world. Christmas is a time for joy and celebration. I will spend more time with my loved ones, share food and gifts to them. I will reflect on the birth of Jesus my Saviour I will be kind to the needy. May we share love, joy and kindness with others by reflecting Jesus’ light. Amen.

‘I’ll take part in my Parish carol of Nine Lessons’
Christmas is that season when Catholics and many Christians around the world celebrate and commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ (Luke 2:4-7). I’ll be celebrating Christmas by decorating our home with lights and a tree, spending time with my family and friends, exchanging gifts, and sharing a special meal (Matthew 2:7-12). During this Advent Season, I’ll take part in my Parish Carol of Nine Lessons, visit an Orphanage home with my family, support St. Vincent De Paul Society with items that can be shared with the less-privileged and attend religious services like the Advent retreat. We find the real joy of Christmas when we make the Saviour the focus of the season. Born in a stable, cradled in a manger, He came forth from heaven to live on earth as mortal man and to establish the kingdom of God.

‘Lighting candles signifies hope, peace, joy, and love ’
A Christmas wreath and candles can create a beautiful, meaningful way to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The wreath’s circle symbolises God’s eternal love, “from everlasting to everlasting” (Psalm 90:2). Evergreen branches remind us of the everlasting life Jesus brings (John 3:16). Lighting candles can mark hope, peace, joy, and love qualities fulfilled in Christ. Jesus is the “light of the world” (John 8:12), so each candle reminds us that His light overcomes darkness (John 1:5). During Christmas, you can gather with family to read the Nativity story from Luke 2:1–20, reflecting on God’s gift to humanity. Singing carols, praying together, and sharing acts of kindness can help express the love described in 1 John 4:9–11. Placing the wreath at the centre of your celebration keeps the focus on Christ. In all these traditions, the heart of Christmas remains the same: celebrating God’s greatest gift Jesus, our Saviour.

The Advent wreath reminds me that Christmas is more than decorations — it’s a journey of the heart. Hope – Isaiah 9:2. I celebrate my Christmas by preparing my heart, spreading love giving generously and worshiping Jesus the true light of the world.

Advent is that beautiful time of waiting and preparing for Christmas. The wreath and candles symbolise hope, peace, love, and joy—just as the Bible teaches. Week 1–4: Light one candle each Sunday and enjoy some relaxing Christmas tunes. Decorate with a wreath on the door, some ornaments, or even a mini tree with lights. Enjoy festive treats like pepper soup, jollof rice, and sweets such as chin chin or puff puff. Exchange small, thoughtful gifts with family and friends— nothing extravagant, just gestures that say, “I got you.” Watch classic Nollywood Christmas movies or a global Christmas movie marathon. Take time to read the Christmas story in Luke 2:1-20, reflecting on Jesus’ birth and the hope He brings. Show love and kindness to others, following Jesus’ example (Matthew 25:40: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these… you did for me”).

The Advent wreath and its candles remind me to watch and pray (Mark 13:33), walk in God’s light (Isaiah 60:1), and rejoice always (Philippians 4:4). I celebrate Christmas by being kind, sharing gifts, and welcoming Jesus into my heart. Each Advent candle teaches me faith (Hebrews 11:1), peace (John 14:27), and hope (Romans 15:13). I celebrate Christmas by attending Mass, singing carols, and showing love to everyone, just as Jesus taught.

Advent is a time for us to prepare our hearts for the arrival of Jesus. The Advent wreath, with its four candles, symbolises hope, peace, joy, and love as we anticipate Christ’s coming. Each week, as we light a candle and pray, we draw nearer to Him. For Christmas, I intend to spread love, assist those in need, and express gratitude to God for the precious gift of His Son. Jesus is the Light of the World (John 8:12).
