Basketball: Nigeria risks FIBA Ban Over Govt Interference
Nigeria is at the risk of incurring the wrath of world basketball ruling body, FIBA, over recent happenstances and obvious government interference in the administration of the game in the country. It could be recalled that the ministry of sports recently took over the duties of Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), with plans to organize the final 8 of the Men’s Premier Basketball league, as well as, taking charge of the male and female national teams international engagements. Reacting to these developments, which has been described as unfortunate, Coach John preye, warned of dire consequencies that might befall the country, if FIBA takes action over what has become an ursurpation of the duties of the Kida led board of the NBBF. ” I am really worried because Nigeria stands the risk of a ban by FIBA, over this unwholesome government interference. Which negates Article 9.10 of FIBA General Statutes. How can you take over the duties of an existing board when there’s obviously no vacuum in the administration?”, Preye asked rhetorically. ” Nigerians should know whom to hold responsible if FIBA’s hammer falls on us. I tell you, there are so much bad blood and dirty politics in the basketball family in Nigeria. ” I can see the hands of Tijani Umar in this developments. He’s obviously hell bent on returning as NBBF’s president for a third term and possibly a lifetime presidency, which the present board of NBBF kicked against when he was ousted in 2017. ” Can anyone explain the reasons behind these ugly and shameful acts by the sports ministry? TJ Umar is using his political clout to once again bring the game in Nigeria to disrepute. Let Nigerians know those to hold responsible when FIBA comes knocking”, the Port-Harcourt based founder of Heritage Basketball Academy, stated.
