- We are stewards and not owners of life itself, Fr. Odozi tells lay faithful
The Catholic community gathered recently in solemn reverence at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Victoria Island, Lagos, for the Requiem Mass of late Chief Damian Okwuchukwu Nwolisa, as family, friends, and dignitaries paid tribute to a life described as deeply faithful, loving, and fruitful. In his homily, Rev. Fr. Joseph Odozi urged mourners to draw hope from Scripture even amid grief.

Quoting Lamentations, he said, “My soul is bereft of peace, I have forgotten what happiness is… Yet this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases.” Fr. Odozi described Chief Nwolisa as a man who lived through seasons of joy and sorrow, achievements and losses, yet carried within him a quiet confidence in God. “He believed, perhaps not always loudly, but surely. And that faith has not disappointed him,” he said.
Highlighting the fruits of Chief Nwolisa’s life seen in his children and grandchildren, the priest emphasised his unwavering dedication to family, friends, and community. “His life was not just lived, it was poured out,” Fr. Odozi said, adding that the late Chief embodied Christ’s call in the Gospel to find rest in Him. “Chief has heard that call not in metaphor, but in truth and spirit. He has laboured, he has loved, he has led. And now, the Master calls him home to the rest of the just, the beloved, those who die in the Lord,” he said.

The priest reminded the congregation of life’s fleeting nature, urging all to reflect on their own journeys. “Do we actually realise we are stewards and not owners of life itself? Let us ask God to give us the grace to be more conscious and focused on our races.” Concluding the homily, Fr. Odozi prayed for the peaceful repose of Chief Nwolisa’s soul. “Rest now, Chief, your work is done. The burden is lifted. May angels lead you into paradise, and may the Lord grant you the rest only He can give.” The Mass drew attendees from across the country, united in honouring the enduring legacy of a man remembered for his faith, humility, and service.
