When was the last time you took a good look at your resume and updated your technical skills? If you work within the technology industry and are hoping to climb the ladder, escape the RTO mandates at your current job, or simply advance your career within a similar role, it’s essential that you give your resume a well-deserved refresh at least a couple of times a year. Technology and employers’ requirements are changing so fast, that it is critical to quickly adapt to their demands and ensure your resume showcases that you have been moving along with the times.

“In the next decade, estimates say the number of tech jobs will grow at twice the rate of the overall U.S. workforce, increasing from 6 million in 2023 to 7.1 million in 2034,” says Indeed.com in its latest report Filling your resume with the technical skills that employers want ensures that you and your skills are more in demand, and that you are able to find work, including remote jobs, much more quickly and will have greater success in persuading employers that you are a suitable candidate for their jobs.
5 Tech skills to include in your resume in 2024 New Indeed.com data reveals the most in-demand tech skills that are trending in job ads within the past year, and of them, the top five that are necessary for tech workers are:
1. Python
2. AWS
3. Oracle
4. Java
5. JavaScript
The software platforms with the greatest rate of demand increase are PyTorch, Rust, TensorFlow, Flutter, and Dart. Meanwhile, platforms including Xamarin, Erlang, Azure, iOS, PHP, SQLite, and React Native are seeing the greatest decline in interest and demand from employers. Here are some creative ways to demonstrate these skills in your resume:
1. Showcase real-world projects
Build a portfolio of projects which you have developed using these technologies. For each project, highlight technologies and platforms used. This validates the skills listed within your resume.
2. Tailor your resume to the job
Of course, you are most likely already aware of this, but it cannot be stressed enough: customize your resume to every job you apply for. Each role will have a specific set of requirements as far as technical criteria is concerned, and you are doing your self a disservice if you have the skills they are looking for, but fail to mention them. Ensure you highlight the skills within the person specification and job description, and match them with your own resume. And if you don’t have a particular skill yet or are not completely proficient, list it and include the fact that you are currently learning it (only if you are, of course don’t lie). This leads on to the next point.
3. Include relevant certifications
If you have recently completed an AWS certification, or any other training or bootcamps relevant to the in-demand skills listed above, be sure to include this. Don’t take yourself for granted—even though it can be easy to do so. Mention every training you have undertaken; this works in your favor and demonstrates your passion for continued growth and learning to employers. The key to being successful within the job market and having a never-ending array of career opportunities available, is to ensure that your learning and skills development are never-ending. The extent to which you polish and retrain to learn new technical skills will be the extent to which your career will grow.
